This neighbourhood house operates in one of the most diverse areas of Vancouver, “where the very Canadian challenges of immigration, poverty and social exclusion come together at the community level.” It describes itself as the center of activity for the multicultural and diverse community in which is located.
Centered near the busy hub of East Broadway and Fraser, Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House offers a caring, safe and supportive space for its vibrant and diverse community, aiming to make the neighbourhood – the foundation of the city – a better place to live. Established in 1976, MPNH has a long history of physical growth and community development. The House is located in one of the most diverse and oldest parts of the city, and is dealing with challenges of immigration, poverty, and social exclusion. Community participants and volunteers endeavor to help newcomers, those living with low incomes, and those wishing to “age in place” with dignity. With British Columbia having the highest child poverty rates in Canada and with provincial funding cuts reducing Neighbourhood Houses’ budgets, MPNH also faces the setback of being in a community identified as high risk for children (Dr Hertzman et al, University of BC).
MPNH provides core services like childcare, as well as children and youth programs geared toward providing struggling youth with resources and a place to talk, aiming to socially engage youth at risk with their community and to help youth with employment services. They provide resources for the strengthening and empowerment of families with a variety of accessible workshops, drop-in sessions and programs. Also available are seniors’ services that promote health, wellness, building social relationships, cross-cultural understanding, as well as provide opportunities for socialization, learning new skills, and enjoying peer support. Community development resources help address community literacy, middle childhood, youth community development, and provide finances through the Neighbourhood Small Grants project for community projects that help build inclusive communities. MPNH also has the Broadway Connections program, which aims to increase the independent living skills and quality of life of physically disabled adults through a variety of awareness and support services.
