Kitsilano Neighbourhood House describes itself as “the hub of Vancouver’s Westside, a thriving, healthy, safe and vibrant community.” Its mission is to strengthen the community “through leadership, collaboration and opportunity.”
Nestled among trees in a quiet area of the West side of Vancouver, Kitsilano Neighbourhood House has been working with its community, government and private enterprise in addressing community needs and issues, while building a welcoming and supportive space for its six constituent West Side communities since its inception in 1972 (but its history goes further back to 1894).
With core services like childcare, family programs (support of the development of early literacy, parent education, community referrals, family networking, and support), older adults and senior programs, support groups (income tax program, single mothers’ support group, women’s support program, gamblers anonymous, UBC law students legal advice program, multicultural women’s support program), martial arts classes and youth programs (leadership, health, self-esteem, empowerment, diversity, developmental growth and social consciousness), KNH provides a safe and nurturing environment for the growth and betterment of its community members.
Considering the history of environmentalism, Green Peace and counterculture in the Kitsilano community, KNH also offers a creative variety of food security initiatives and programs that aim to empower and give control back to citizens in creating more affordable, culturally appropriate, socially ethical, environmentally sustainable food systems that also provide sustenance that meets dietary needs and that can be obtained in a dignified manner. Such programs include: Community Supported Agriculture, Community Garden Collaborative, Fruit & Veggie Deal, Westside Pocket Markets, Kitsilano Growers Market, and Westside Food Security Collaborative.
