Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia (ISS-BC) is one of the key settlement services for new immigrants and refugees upon their arrival to the province. Since their inception in 1972 in Vancouver, ISS-BC has helped thousands of immigrants and refugees access essential services such as language classes, aid in searching for jobs, and many more. As immigrant populations in BC have grown, ISS-BC has expanded its reach over into other immigrant populated ares by opening up new service centres in various municipalities and establishing specific initiatives.
The Settlement Orientation Services (SOS) is one of the initiatives that ISS-BC has created that aims to deal with issues that refugees, in particular, face within their first few months in BC. Realizing the need to understand the differences between immigrant and refugees, SOS helps specifically with refugee claims and settlement. Some of areas that SOS works with are aid with the refugee claims process, referrals to other settlement services, advocacy and interpretation, help with forms and applications (legal aid, student and work authorizations, etc.) and counselling services.
